The Burglar’s Mindset

Burglars have many different ways of penetrating the house they are targeting.  According to FBI statistics, there is a burglary happening every 15 seconds.  You would not want a burglar breaking into your home and stealing your treasures, not to mention harming the ones you love, would you?  In order to prevent a burglar from violating the sanctity and security of your home, you have to start thinking like a burglar.

Burglars and the Way They Think

Whatever a burglar’s modus operandi is, he always aims to achieve his goal of stealing your valuables without being detected.  While there are many ways by which a burglar may break into a home, they have common elements.

1. Burglars always look for vulnerable access points to their target home.  Vulnerable access points mean that it would be easy for them to enter the house without being seen.

2. Burglars make it a point to carry out their nefarious scheme under the cover of darkness, and enter the house at points where the lighting is poor.  They do not want to be detected while they are trying to execute their burglary, and the dark helps them do that.

3. Burglars target homes that are unoccupied, where no one is at home.  In unoccupied houses, they can easily and leisurely sort through the homeowner’s belongings and lift whatever seems valuable to them.

Burglars Can Be Clever, but So Can You

It takes a lot of planning on a professional burglar’s part to make a successful break-in.  But with a lot of planning on your part, you can make sure that no burglar would find your home an easy target.

There are many ways that you can subvert a burglar’s intentions, and here are some of them.

1. Strengthen and reinforce the access points of your home.  Install some good locks and deadbolts on your doors and windows.  If possible, make your windows invulnerable by putting decorative grills on them. Better yet, go high-tech and put up a good home security and surveillance system.

2. Keep the places where burglars can possibly hide well-lighted.  If there is no place for a burglar to hide and sneak in, he may give up on your house and target another one instead.

3. Set up timers in your home that can be programmed to turn the lights and the television set on at certain hours of the night.  In this way, you will be able to simulate your presence inside your house even when you are away.

Burglars can be very clever and very astute in planning their break-ins.  In order to keep your home safe, you must learn to outwit them.
