Neighborhood Watch Programs
That Improve Home Security
Neighborhood watch programs are an
excellent method of providing protection for your home. It is
recommended that everyone should join one if one is available
in your neighborhood or if none is available, then create one.
It is impossible for you to be around your home every minute of
every day. Shopping, taking the kids to and from school,
working and vacations are just some of the many
activities that will take you away from your home. There is
usually, however, at least one of your neighbors who is not out
at the same time you are, which is the premise on which
neighborhood watch programs work.
An unfortunate situation in this day and age is how many
people do not even know their neighbors' names, or if they do,
they only have time for quick greetings before getting on with
their own activities. In effective neighborhood watch programs
however, everyone in the neighborhood co- operate to provide
greater security for all in the neighborhood, thus offering
great benefit to everyone involved.
How Security is Acquired with Neighborhood Watch
Programs
Make the effort to contact those who live next door to you
and across the street from you. You can also distribute flyers
announcing a meeting to those who live on the streets adjacent
to yours. Take the chance to hold a discussion about improving
the security of your neighborhood through a neighborhood watch
program. It is in everyone's best interest to provide better
security for their loved ones and their personal
possessions.
While it would be impossible for you to convince everyone to
play a part, you only need some of them to join you in order to
create a successful watch program. In most areas, a single
person can easily keep watch on up to a dozen nearby homes.
Having an alert individual watching nearby homes and ready to
call the police at any sign of suspicious activity will greatly
increase the levels of security in the area.
The Importance of Participation in Neighborhood Watch
Programs
With each additional person in the program, more overlapping
"areas of protection" are created, thus providing greater
security to the neighborhood. Thieves and burglars will think
twice before even venturing into a neighborhood that has strong
and active neighborhood watch programs. Any would-be criminal
who attempts to create mischief in the area is likely to be
quickly spotted and apprehended.
Research has shown that crime rates in neighborhoods where
people "watch each others' backs" are significantly lower than
in neighborhoods that do not have this mentality. Advertise the
existence of your neighborhood watch programs through flyers
and posters. This will help to deter potential thieves and
burglars from even entering the area.
Try to engage your local Sheriff's office, as they can
provide guidance and ideas that will improve the effectiveness
of your program. Simply showing the local policemen that you
are ready to defend yourselves and not simply leave everything
to them will naturally encourage them to help you more readily
should the need arise. People are always more willing to come
to the help of those people who help themselves.
Even children should be encouraged to participate in
neighbourhood watch programs once they have reached about 7
years of age. They are quite capable of identifying someone who
is a stranger in the neighborhood and can report such sightings
to older kids or parents. This also inculcates a strong sense
of caution in children from a young age.
Creating neighborhood watch programs are not very
time-consuming nor do they require any money but the benefits
that can be derived from such these programs are enormous in
more ways than one.
