Everyday homes and apartments are broken into by skilled burglars using a variety of methods including picking the lock and lock bumping. The lock jaw has many positive points, such as ease of installation and use, extreme effectiveness, and portability, but it also has its weak points.

Lock bumping

This burglary technique is not only for the professionals any longer. There are videos online showing in vivid detail how to pick locks  and the tools needed. Basically lock bumping involves inserting a blank key, of the same model as your door lock, and tapping the blank key. If done correctly it causes the pins in the locks mechanism to jump into the unlocked position. The Lock Jaw Door Security Device prevents this by simply securing the knob of the deadbolt, so even if the locks internal mechanism has been opened the deadbolt remains firmly locked.

Ease of installation

Usually when I buy a new gadget for my home it usually involves a few moments of anxiety, some cursing and a bruised knuckle or two. The Lock Jaw was the exception to this. The unit mounts just above the turning knob for your deadbolt, and it can be attached using either screws or two sided tape. The screws provided were not of the greatest quality, and will strip rather easily. I suggest taking a trip to the local Home Depot and picking up some better screws, unless you want to do the installation with the two sided tape that is provided.

Effectiveness of unit

I am not going to lie and tell you that I actually tried to pick my own door lock. But i did have my daughter secure the front door with the lock jaw in place, while I tried to unlock the front door from outside using my key… and it works as advertised.The Lock Jaw does have one very obvious weak point in that someone has to be inside to engage it. Basically the device is designed to protect you from burglary while you are at home.

I spent under thirty dollars for this door security device, and it was really worth it . It is a breeze to install, very effective, and can be taken with you if you are an apartment dweller. I mentioned that the unit needs someone inside to operate it , but don’t forget that the ultimate goal of home security should be safe guarding people not things.
