Home Security Lighting Helps Prevent Crimes

The technology needed in home security lighting has finally been developed. In times past, a simple, low-cost timer might have been used to turn indoor lights on and off at selected times. A similar device could be utilized on outdoor lights, using differing timing. Floodlights were used frequently. But top of the line lighting for home security is much more high-tech today.

It is possible to use your PC, with the proper software, to control your indoor lighting timers. This makes a much more realistic reproduction of lifelike usage possible. The more realistic the pattern is, the more likely it is the system will deter intruders. They will find an easier location.

Just as important as the pattern are the placement and levels of the lighting. For example, if the entire house is illuminated, it is easy for potential thieves to see the interior of the home, and certainly does not give the impression that the homeowner is sitting quietly within, reading a book. Experienced criminals will easily be able to tell that that no one is home, in addition to being able to clearly see exactly what they want to remove before even entering the home.

The placement and lighting levels outside are equally as important. Floodlights will light an area so well it is like daylight. However, these lights have drawbacks in that that can temporarily blind you to seeing other areas of you yard, and they produce shadows, creating ideal places for thieves to hide.

For home security purposes, it is essential to create an evenly distributed and comfortably illuminated lighting level. In corner landscaped areas that might easily hide a potential thief, lighting should cast only soft shadows, making the area more difficult to hide in. Walkways around the house can have brighter lighting, but the lighting levels should still be low enough that you can easily view them without being blinded by the lights.

There are alternatives to incandescent bulbs that will help to keep energy costs as low as possible. Although fluorescents bulbs were previously the only lower-cost choice, this is not the case anymore. There is now a variety of choices for economical lighting.

Previously rather expensive, sodium lamps now offer the ideal lighting level for walkways and corners at an affordable price. These lights are comparable to those used in some areas as streetlights.

Another energy-saving type of lighting for inside the home is the LED light. LED bulbs have an initial cost that is rather high, with a bulb corresponding to a typical 100-watt bulb sometimes costing more than $10. However, an LED bulb will last 10 years or even longer, compared to the approximately one-year life of an incandescent bulb.

In addition, they give you more natural lighting, so there is less stress on your eyes. And, as an added bonus when these lights are being used for home security, turning them on and off doesn't contribute to any wear and tear on them. This means they will not burn out any quicker in high use areas than they will with low use.

Therefore, it is clear to see that when designing a home security lighting system, it will be beneficial to the homeowner to incorporate the latest technology.
