Do Door Alarms Make
Sense
Many homeowners believe that security
systems are a waste of money. They were probably looking at the
sophisticated multi-device systems that cost thousands of
dollars. Indeed, such items would be a waste of cash unless you
were trying to secure a bank. But for your home, you might want
to consider installing one of the most basic security devices
around - the door alarm.
What's with Door Alarms?
They're very basic devices, yet door alarms can serve a wide
variety of uses. Door alarms are basically links or connections
between the door and the door frame. When that link is broken -
such as when the door is opened and the door moves away from
the frame - you're alerted of the occurrence. The link could be
various things, from a lock-like device to simple magnetic
strips mounted on the door and the frame. The alarm can also
vary from a gentle beeping sound to an all-out blare, depending
on your device and your settings.
Door alarms are also very inexpensive. Because the
technology in them is very commonplace, you won't have any
trouble finding a device that fits your budget. Expect to
spend, at the maximum, a hundred bucks for the more
sophisticated models with variable settings. More basic units,
obviously, will cost considerably less. This is one of the
things that door alarms have going for them; you won't need to
break the bank just to secure your entire house.
Safety and Security
Obviously, security is one of the primary functions of a
door alarm. A figure recently released by the Department of
Justice estimates that over half the break-ins and burglaries
in the past few years’ involved unforced entry. That meant that
the criminal was able to get into the premises while the
homeowner was completely unaware. Door alarms help keep you
from being part of this statistic. It's a simple yet excellent
deterrent for the primary entrance into your home.
Door alarms can also be used as an added safety feature in
your home. If there's a certain room or area containing
dangerous materials, a door alarm will alert you when somebody
attempts to enter. It also helps in keeping out children and
unwary visitors from such places. A mild or low-setting door
alarm could be used for monitoring the movements of people in
and out of rooms. Because most areas will probably have a door
leading to them, there are lots of uses for a door alarm in
your home.
They don't look like much but door alarms, when properly
used, can go a long way in enhancing the safety and security of
your home. Not only do you keep unwanted persons out, you also
prevent people from wandering into places where they shouldn't
be.
